The marine reserve Bahía de Palma streches itself outbetween the Club Náutico del Arenal and the cape of Regana. The area has a long history of antropogenic acitvities which, since the Marine Reserve Status was established in 1982 can be regulated.The regulations ensure the protection of two types of habitats that are representative of the mediterranean area. The first habitat are sandy bottoms which, among other functions, provide the grounds for posidonia sea-grass meadows to develop. Posidonia oceanica itself is a species that requires protection due to its ecologically important functions such as provision of habitat to other species. The second important habitat are rocky bottoms that are the preferred habitat of many benthic and invertebrate species of which many are protected by international regulations. A speacial protection measure that was taken since the early 90ies is the installation of arificial reefs which at the same time provide habitat to for example fish species but most importantly prevent destructive bottom trawling fishing methods.
